We Celebrate

When we first met Charlotte (nearly 3 years ago in Ukraine)... we had NO idea what we decided to adopt her. Sure, we knew she had cross eyes... we had no idea how many surgeries it would take to correct, or the fact that she desperately needed glasses in order to see a few feet in front of her... we had no idea she'd need hearing aids, or how long it would take for her to catch up developmentally... to say she was developmentally delayed, felt like an understatement at that time. But, we knew... we'd love her.

the moment she started to talk... we celebrated.

the moment she could wear big girl unders (she was in a diaper still at 3.5 years old)... we celebrated.

the moment she could recite the alphabet... we celebrated.

the moment she hit 25 lbs... we celebrated.

the moment she could differentiate between her letters and numbers... we celebrated.

the moment she could do a somersault... we celebrated

the moment she could write all of her letters (capital and lowercase)... we celebrated.

the moment she could hop on 1 leg... we celebrated.

the moment she could write out her name... first, middle, and last... we celebrated.

the moment she learned how to make a friend... we celebrated.

the moment she could tell you what letter made what sound... we celebrated.

the moment she could tell you the difference between left and right... we celebrated.

the moment she began placing those letter sounds together to create words... we celebrated.

the moment she could add numbers together... we celebrated.

the moment she hid in a tire and read her book outloud to herself...

we celebrated.

I have been waiting days...weeks... MONTHS... for Charlotte to pick up a book, and just read it (on her own). I was busy cleaning the house the other day... went outside to throw away the garbage, and heard this little chatter coming from the tire... looked over, and all I saw, was a book, held by the sweetest hands, sticking out.

That's what parenthood is... right? Celebrating each and every moment... not just successes... but also failures (I should point out)...  To get to this point... we've had so many ups and downs, and we've had to sit back... watch her make mistakes... or nail something.... and we do this all while loving on her.

"Can't make a mistake, can't make anything."

  1. Wowzers, this post made me a bit misty eyed. So very happy to hear about another success for that sweet girl, and so thankful she has such a wonderful family in her life! Congrats on the reading milestone! Way to go Charlotte (good book too)!
